Expats Living in Spain

Expats Living in Spain read more...
There are lots of expats living in Spain. In fact, some years ago, Spain had an immigrant population of 4.8 million! It's not just British retired people who are moving to Spain, it is also a hot destination for retirees from Scandinavia, Holland, Germany, France, Eastern Europe and even US citizens.

Spain is also becoming increasingly popular with the younger generation, with workers and their families.

So, what is it about Spain that draws so many immigrants? Why are there so many expats living in Spain? Here are some possible reasons?

1.The Climate – Many Northern Europeans want to get away from cold, wet winters and move to a country with a healthier, and nicer, climate. The Costa Blanca, Costa Calida, Costa del Sol and Southern Spain all offer a fantastic climate of year round sun and mild, dry winters. Murcia region has the cleanest air in Europe and the Costa Blanca has one of the healthiest climates in the world, according to the World Health Organization.

2.Cheaper cost of living – Retired expats can enjoy their retirement because their pension goes further in Spain, and workers can give their families a better standard of living if they can work online for higher British wages.

3.Space – Many British people move to Spain to get away from the overcrowding in the UK. The tiny island of the UK has a population of over 60 million people and yet Spain, which has twice the land area of the UK, only has a population of 45 million – that's three quarters of the amount of people but in a bigger country! Britain is so built up and busy, and a land of traffic jams. Spain has vast uninhabited areas, natural parks and quiet roads.

4.Lifestyle – Many expats comment on the more relaxed lifestyle they enjoy in Spain. People aren't in a rush and Spaniards are much more laid back than many nationalities. Spaniards take afternoon siestas and enjoy their evenings. You can nap in the afternoons and celebrate fiestas in the evening!
Spain also offers a great outdoor lifestyle because of its climate. You can enjoy your garden or terrace all year round and enjoy growing new plants and fruit like figs, citrus fruit and grapes. No more cancelled barbecues either. In Spain, your barbecue can be used most days.

5.Family – Many younger expats are moving to Spain to give their families a better life. Spain is one of the best places for families because the family unit is valued and children are treasured. Children play on the streets of villages, watched by the old folk, and are welcomed in bars and restaurants and it is usual to see many generations of a family enjoying a meal out at way past 10pm.

6.Property Prices – Although Spanish property prices have gone up recently, property is still significantly cheaper than in many countries and, if you have building expertise, you can buy a ruin for under 50,000 euros and do it up.

7.Culture – Spain has an interesting history and culture. You will never run out of things to do and see in Spain. Think about the Moorish Alhambra in Granada and the wonderful architecture of Barcelona, and what about beautiful cities like Sevilla (Seville)? Spain is also the country of flamenco, bullfighting and fiesta.

These are just a few reasons why so many people move to Spain every year. Will you be one of them?
